Friends of National Service
Awards Reception 2008
February 12, 2008
Washington, DC
On February 12, 2008, 500 friends and supporters of national service gathered in the nation’s capital to celebrate and honor elected officials and private citizens who have worked to protect and expand national service opportunities for all Americans. The annual Friends of National Service Reception was presented by the Comcast Corporation and CVS Caremark and co-hosted by Voices for National Service and The Corps Network.
First Lady of New York Silda Wall Spitzer offered welcoming remarks to the audience, which included congressional and agency staff, program directors, state commissioners, service alumni, and private sector partners. Florida Governor Charlie Crist, Senator Jack Reed (RI), Representative George Miller (CA), Representative Phil Hare (IL), and Representative John Sarbanes (MD), and former Senator Harris Wofford were all present to accept their respective awards and share their vision for the future of national service. Recipients of the Citizen Service Award Richard Stengel, Managing Editor of TIME, and Dorothy Johnson also attended.
During the event, it was announced that the Senate had established a National Service Congressional Caucus, modeled after the Caucus formed in the House of Representatives in 2004. Senator Christopher Dodd (CT) and Senator Thad Cochran (MS) are co-chairing the bipartisan group dedicated to raising congressional awareness of national service and expanding service opportunities for all Americans.
